There are eight classes arranged in year groups from 4-11 year old. Classes are of mixed ability.

The present building was opened in February 1975 and is of a modern semi-open plan design. It has an Infant Section with three classrooms, a quiet room/library and a shared art area. The central hall is equipped for drama (stage and spotlights), P.E. (continental frame, mats, box etc) and dinners (dining tables are kept in a separate large recess).

The junior Department comprises of four classrooms, two shared art areas, quiet room and computer room.

Our Mary Thomas Annex (built in 2000) has given us a multi purpose room - used as a library, for Breakfast Club and also for Family Literacy, Family Numeracy, governors’ meetings etc., group room, store and connecting corridor.

There is a large tarmacadam playground, sports field, nature garden and play equipment area.

In 2006 we completed the creation of our Early Years Creative Play area consisting of soft play covered facility, outdoor play and sensory garden. It is to be named the Cec Emmerson Centre for Learning, after our long serving ex-head teacher, who died in 2005.

The centre was opened in July 2006 by the Bishop of Jarrow.

"Open Door" Policy

Although nowadays entrances to the school are literally kept securely locked, we still operate an "open-door" policy i.e. parents are WELCOME to approach teachers and myself to answer queries at anytime.

The children’s entrance doors are open until 8.55 a.m. and parents are asked to take the children to the playground and line up to come into school.  After 8.55 a.m. the children’s entrance doors are closed and parents may gain access to school via the main entrance door informing who is on lateness duty of their child’s name.  Unfortunately, we have a problem that some parents are entering by the children’s entrance door but walking through the school and leaving by the main entrance door allowing other parents to enter sometimes causing confusion at the main entrance.  If your child comes into school after 8.55 a.m. and enters by the main entrance door it is important that you make office staff aware that your child is now in school and then leave unless it is necessary to accompany your child to class.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT WE KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE AND SO WE ASK FOR YOUR HELP WITH THE ABOVE.

Children should enter by their own doorways and unless there is a need to speak to a member of staff, we ask that parents remain in the school yard.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Each year we conduct an extensive parents and pupils consultation exercise, where we gather YOUR views about OUR school. Where appropriate we use this information to feed our future plans for school development.

We pride ourselves on being a "Listening School"
